Atlanta Nonprofit Creates Program To Help Individuals, Families Pay Rent During Pandemic

A local nonprofit is trying to help families and individuals who recently exited homelessness maintain their housing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Matt Hurd, who is the executive director for Open Doors, says his organization has placed more than 7,300 families and individuals in rental properties throughout Atlanta.
“It’s only through the support of our partners, property partners, nonprofit partners that we are able to make this work happen.”
On Tuesday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Hurd told host Rose Scott that national and local data show that 20% to 30% of households that rent are struggling to pay rent during the pandemic.
Hurd shared that Open Doors recently created a program called Rent Bridge.
“Rent Bridge is really designed to help any of our households placed to be able to have a safety net,” explained Hurd.
During the conversation, Hurd also talked about a new partnership with Atlanta city leaders to find permanent housing for people who are temporarily living at hotels during the COVID-19 crisis.
