Longtime Artistic Director Tom Key Retires After 25 Years
Tom Key became the Theatrical Outfit’s artistic director in 1995. During his time in that role, he oversaw the theater’s move from its Midtown location to downtown’s Rialto Center for the Arts.

Longtime artistic director of the Theatrical Outfit, Tom Key, has officially retired after 25 years serving in that position.
Key began his career as a freelance theater artist and earned a degree in English from the University of Tennessee.
Key became the artistic director back in 1995. During his time in that role, he oversaw the theater’s move from its Midtown location to downtown’s Rialto Center for the Arts. He also was at the helm during the creation of the Balzer Theater in 2005.
Throughout his career, Key has been a champion of diversity, equality and unity — his final season at the Theatrical Outfit being no exception to this. The Laramie Project, which was staged during his final season there, was met with both critical and commercial success.
Key joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes for a conversation about his love of theater, his long career and what the future holds for him.
