This year marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment.

In celebration of women’s right to vote, the Atlanta Women’s Chorus is putting on a virtual concert called “She Rises!” — a special tribute to the women who fought for suffrage, and to honor how far they have come.

“City Lights” host Lois Reitzes spoke with director Melissa Arasi about this event.

“I really love the title of the concert. The signature piece that opens the concert is called ‘She Rises.’ It just had so many different layers to the meaning. Catherine Dalton wrote this piece, and she and I have talked several times about its meaning to her. And it talks from the perspective of the power of a woman, but also that sacred light and the flame kind of burning. It’s very warm and welcoming and powerful. It kind of sets the tone for this whole concert,” Arasi said.

The event will be streamed here on July 30 starting at 8 p.m.
