Back To School: APS Superintendent Discusses Virtual Learning For Students, Teachers This Fall

As COVID-19 cases continue to surge in the metro Atlanta area, Atlanta Public Schools will welcome students back to school virtually on Aug. 24.

It’s all part of the district’s Day 1 2020: Return + Learn plan.

Lisa Herring, who was sworn in as superintendent in early July, says the decision to start the 2020-2021 school year virtually was about doing what’s best for the students and the adults who serve them.

“I am a superintendent, and like all my superintendent peers across this country, we are responsible for thousands of parents’ children,” Herring said. “And so our decision can’t be grounded in what just helps a selected group, but what helps all.”

On Tuesday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Herring talks with host Rose Scott about the district’s plan to reopen virtually. During the conversation, Herring also shares what the district is doing to help families with connectivity issues and how teachers are preparing to take on virtual instruction.

Herring also announced that APS is hiring a chief equity and social justice officer to help with social justice and equity issues.
