Savannah, Tybee Island Mayors Report High Volume Of Visitors Over Labor Day Weekend

Tybee Island Mayor Shirley Sessions and Savannah Mayor Van Johnson say their cities saw a high volume of travelers this Labor Day weekend, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Sessions told host Rose Scott about 12,000 cars traveled to her community each day Saturday and Sunday. She estimated one-third of the people she saw in public were wearing masks or had them in their possession.

Meanwhile, in Savannah, which recently passed a mask mandate, Johnson said some hotels reported they were at full capacity for the first time this year.

Both local leaders said it will take a few weeks to gather data on whether this high volume of visitors will lead to a spike in COVID-19 cases.

“When people come [to Savannah,] we don’t know who they are. We don’t know where they’re coming from. We don’t know what habits they had before they got here,” Johnson said. “We hold our breath, and then we just hope and pray that once they’ve gone about their lives that we are relatively unscathed by that.”
