Just behind the visitor center and National Park Service offices at Island Ford Park, the park’s trail begins.

“It has just sustained so much erosion, mostly from water, but also from people you know, just coming down a trail,” said Brittany Jones, the executive director of the Chattahoochee National Park Conservancy, a nonprofit that works alongside the National Park Services (NPS) to maintain the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, which are both headquartered at Island Ford.

Jones said this trailhead on the island, which she affectionately refers to as “The Mess,” has long been a cause of concern for park staff.
