Umaymah Mohammad wants to improve healthcare for marginalized communities. When Mohammad applied to Emory University’s medical school, she wanted to better understand how structural violence impacts communities of color and the role physicians play in addressing violence as a form of preventative healthcare.

In her personal statement, Mohammad wrote about the experiences of her mother and grandfather, who were both displaced during two separate wars with Israel.

The first-generation Palestinian American student enrolled at Emory in 2019. However, the medical-sociology dual degree student was at the midway point of completing her PhD program when she was suspended from Emory’s medical school. She says she was suspended after participating in various pro-Palestinian demonstrations on Emory’s campus, including the April 2024 encampment. She also appeared on the news program “Democracy Now!” and was critical of Emory and a professor who was volunteering as a medic with the Israeli military.
