The deteriorating Fulton County Jail has long faced challenges in the form of overcrowding and understaffing, as recently highlighted by the release of a report by an independent monitor.

The report highlights a staffing crisis, with only one deputy or officer overseeing about 200 residents per floor. The report also notes overcrowded intake areas and inadequate supervision, leading to contraband issues.

The jail already entered into a consent decree with the U.S. Department of Justice earlier this year over unsafe conditions. Now, Fulton County commissioners have approved the construction of a purpose-built facility for mental health and medical needs, as well as a renovation of the county’s current jail facility.
