“Laugh Track” examines what life’s key moments and holidays will look like in the age of zoom, social distancing and the general craziness that is 2020.

Dad's Garage

Dad’s Garage and the Alliance Theatre have partnered up to bring us some much-needed laughs this holiday season. “Laugh Track” is a new streaming sketch comedy series, split into six different episodes which will release through March. The goal of the series is to examine what life’s key moments and holidays will look like in the age of zoom, social distancing and the general craziness that is 2020.

The series will feature the work of Dad’s talented actors, Gina Rickicki, Avery Sharpe, Karen Cassady, Jamila Porter, and Freddy Boyd. The format for “Laugh Track” was inspired by Cassady’s own videos on social media app TikTok, where she has amassed close to 900,000 followers. The series replaces long-form sketches that are traditional of the genre, with quick minute long videos.

Dad’s Garage artistic director Jon Carr and actor Gina Rickicki joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes for a conversation about the new series and what it was like for Dad’s to partner with the Alliance Theatre.

“Laugh Track” can be streamed through March 30.

Interview Highlights:

Jon Carr on partnering with the Alliance Theatre:

“They wanted to do a comedy show. And so they’re like rather than reinvent the wheel, they reached out to us and asked us if we wanted to participate in it, and we said, absolutely. So we put together this fun show for them. And so far, it’s been just a blast putting it together.”

Carr on “Laugh Track’s” format:

“We thought of a sketch show that you see like Saturday Night Live or a Key and Peele or something like that. But with it being online content, we wanted to do something a little bit different. So we kind of took the format, the way that Karen made her short form, TikTok videos. So we’ve got the actors, including Gina, and they’re all making their own sketches at home. It’s very quick, fast, funny sketches.”
