Since returning to the White House, President Trump has taken direct aim at credible national and local news outlets through executive orders, legal actions, and funding cuts.

This all comes as a Gallup poll shows public trust in mass media has hit a record low, with only 28% of Americans expressing a “great deal” or “fair amount” of trust in it. That rate has been declining among Republicans for decades, with only 8% of respondents trusting the mass media. Also, Democrats hold a slim majority at 51% and independents at 27%.

For a special edition of “Closer Look,” host Rose Scott asked local news journalists about how their outlets are working to stay relevant, build trust and strengthen community connections.
