A little over a year ago, when Chandra Thomas Whitfield began compiling data, conducting interviews and sifting through research, she says she had no idea that at one point in the course of her 25-plus-year career, she too had likely been underpaid as a Black woman journalist.
“I was in my 20s, and I wanted to seek opportunity, and that opportunity was to work in television for the first time,” the veteran journalist said. “And I wasn’t already getting paid very much, and I actually had to take a pay cut to move into this new position.”
Whitfield’s personal story somewhat mirrors the stories of some of the guests she interviews for her investigative podcast “In the Gap.”
