The Atlanta Opera And True Colors Theatre’s ‘Concert For Unity’ Celebrates Diversity Through Music
“Concert for Unity” is on May 8 and 9.

Music has the power to heal, uplift, and bring us together. With those ideals, the internationally renowned opera singer Morris Robinson has created a “Concert for Unity.” It will be performed May 8 at The Atlanta Opera’s Big Tent on the grounds of the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center and May 9 on the grounds of the Southwest Arts Center. Robinson joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes via Zoom to discuss the concerts and virtual discussions.
“Music is one of those universal languages that has the ability to heal and bring people together from all walks of life, so that’s what we’re going to use it for,” said Robinson. He continued, “We are not just talking the talk, but walking the walk and doing all the things we view as necessary to make sure we create an environment that is both diverse and inclusive, not just on our stage but in our audience and community as well.”
The concert is presented in partnership between The Atlanta Opera and Kenny Leon’s True Color Theatre.
The May 8 concert will be divided into two parts — the first being all classical music, the second will be dedicated to African American composers, music, gospels and spirituals. There will also be a spoken word performance by actor Enoch King. The May 9 event is a special Mother’s Day concert.
On May 6, there will be a virtual panel discussion called “Black Voices in Classical Music: A Conversation About Access,” this is part of the True Colors’ Community Conversations series.
