Brazilian martial arts techniques being taught to Marietta police officers

Police officers in Marietta are learning Brazilian martial arts techniques.

On Monday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Major Jake King of the Marietta Police Department told program host Rose Scott that Marietta police officers are required to take Jiu-Jitsu training twice a week for five months.

King, who launched the Jiu-Jitsu training program at the department three years ago, said that Jiu-Jitsu is the gentle art of controlling people.

King said he launched the program, which teaches officers how to control a person without kicking and punching, as an effort to offer additional training and resources to officers to reduce use-of-force incidents.

“We expect a certain amount of professionalism and training out of our police officers, but in the state of Georgia, they haven’t raised the number of hours for police officer training since the ‘80s,” he said.
