A person has been detained following suspected celebratory gunfire near the city of Avondale Estates’ July 4 fireworks show.
The event was held at Napoleon B. Cobb Stadium, formerly known as Avondale Stadium, at the DeKalb School of the Arts on Saturday evening.
“At approximately 9:15 p.m. during the fireworks celebration, the Avondale Estates Police Department, DeKalb County School District Police, and event security responded to suspected celebratory gunfire in the area,” a news release from the city said. “Out of an abundance of caution, attendees were quickly and safely escorted from the stadium.”
The news release said there were no injuries or incidents. All guests were checked for weapons upon entering the stadium, according to the news release.
“A suspect has been detained, and the investigation is ongoing,” the news release said. “We sincerely thank everyone who joined us for this year’s fireworks celebration and for their cooperation. We wish you a safe and happy Fourth of July.”
