DeKalb officials warn public about YouTuber impersonating health inspector

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A YouTuber impersonating a health inspector is raising alarms among public health officials in DeKalb County.

The content creator, Boku Blackk, sometimes uploads videos of “inspections” at local restaurants to his YouTube channel. DeKalb Public Health officials cited a video uploaded in March as evidence of his antics.

“This individual has made appearances in the metro area, including in DeKalb County, as video footage shows a visit to an establishment on Buford Highway in Brookhaven,” a news advisory from the DeKalb County Department of Public Health said. “This individual has also impersonated an inspector in other states, as seen on their YouTube page, seemingly targeting Asian establishments.”

The news advisory notes that under Georgia law, impersonating an agent of the health department or any public board of health is a misdemeanor. Attempts to reach the creator of the YouTube channel were unsuccessful.

“Stunts, such as these, erode the trust of food service establishments and the credibility of legitimate Environmental Health Specialists (health inspectors),” the news advisory said.

The DeKalb County Board of Health said legitimate health inspectors should:

Have their photo ID with them. “If an establishment is not sure if the person is legitimate, call the health department to verify their credentials,” the news advisory said.
Be professional in both their appearance and actions.
Never take any money in the field.
Never take any free food or drink from the restaurant while conducting an inspection or even when not on the clock. Legitimate health inspectors will pay for their food like any other customer.
Provide some form of documentation after any visit, whether immediately via email or as a physical copy. “If it is a routine inspection, a copy of the inspection report should be obtained after it is signed,” the news advisory said. “If it is an informal, complaint investigation or follow-up inspection, documentation summarizing the visit should be obtained with signatures of the inspector and establishment representative.”
