Alpharetta School Sued for Removing Student Body President

An Atlanta federal court today heard an Alpharetta High School student’s request to be reinstated as student body president. Reuben Lack says he was forced out of the position.

School officials removed Lack saying he was a poor leader. But Lack says it was for a different reason. James Radford is Lack’s attorney.

“He was removed from his position shortly after introducing a resolution to alter prom traditions so that they would be more accessible to gay and lesbian students,” Radford says.

Radford says Lack’s removal is a violation of his First Amendment right to free speech.

Fulton County Schools declined an interview, but issued a statement, citing examples of what they said was Lack’s poor leadership. They said he rescheduled meetings with little notice, went against the instructions of faculty advisors, and called out students on social media for not siding with him on issues. Radford denies those charges, but says they aren’t terminable offenses.

“These are small things that alone would never warrant stripping someone of an honor,” he says.

It’s unclear when the judge will issue a ruling. Radford says he’s open to settling the matter with the school system.
