Among his many accomplishments, the late civil rights icon co-founded the Lowery Institute for Justice and Human Rights at Clark Atlanta University with his late wife, Evelyn, and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference along with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Lowery also led the SCLC for two decades, led boycotts, advocated for the poor, pushed for racial equality and against war. He Famously called out President George W. Bush for the war in Iraq while speaking at Coretta Scott King’s funeral– with Bush just feet behind him.

Over the weekend after his death was confirmed, “Morning Edition” host Lisa Rayam talked with Ambassador  Young about Lowery’s legacy.

A statement from the family said due to current social distancing requirements a public memorial will be scheduled in the summer or fall.
