An older generation inspired by Apollo hopes Artemis does the same for today's young Atlantans

When people think of Fernbank, they often picture the grand Fernbank Natural History Museum with its dinosaur fossils and live animal exhibits, but just a short distance away is Fernbank Science Center — the original Fernbank.

Built in 1967, the Fernbank Science Center has long played an important role for students in DeKalb and throughout metro Atlanta, but less well known is the key role it played in the Apollo missions of the 1960s.

Mark Lancaster, Mitzi Adams and Doug Danielson were all students in the area around that time, and their shared fascination with space exploration led them to volunteer as observatory assistants at Fernbank.
