Approaching nearly three years on the job, Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring says she’s still grateful to lead the district and understands that challenges still exist.

“I’m well, our children will get well, and many are — but I have to be honest around our continued laser focus to ensure that all of them are,” said Herring.

Herring, a  guest on Wednesday’s edition of Closer Look,” talked about several topics including recent calls for her resignation, how the district can create more business partnerships to expand career programs for students and the funding for the APS State of the District event.

“One corporate partnership far exceeds the cost of that event,” she explained.

Herring also talked about using data and the “Student Outcomes Focused Governance” framework to better understand and accelerate student performance.

“Even as we see progress in some of our most challenged students, progress doesn’t necessarily mean that we will see them at proficiency immediately — but we will see them to it, so progress over time,” explained Dr. Herring.
