Atlanta Ballet’s latest virtual choreographic initiative is called “Silver Linings.” The initiative will feature a variety of different original pieces created by Atlanta Ballet dances. The events will be livestreamed Feb. 12 and March 19.

Claudia Schreier is the choreographer in residence for Atlanta Ballet. Her work featured in “Silver Linings” is the Pleaides Dance.

“Structurally, this is a ballet designed for the time of COVID. There is no touching, save for some duet work created for the sole couple, and therefore there isn’t a second cast or understudies for this part,” Schreier said. “The work is created in sections, in part to allow for the potential segmenting of material due to unanticipated shifts in pods, quarantines, etc. Artistically, though, I find it appealing to create an ensemble work rooted in preludes, and to revel in the contrasts of simplicity and complexity that define Yoshimatsu’s work.”

Darian Kane is an Atlanta Ballet dancer and choreographer. Her work in “Silver Linings” is Dr. Rainbow’s Infinity Mirror.

“Dr. Rainbow is this gender-neutral, right-brain creativity fiend,” Kane said. “And this character lives inside this world and basically wakes up a new life and creates this world as he or she goes and splits him or herself into multiple characters and iterations, which are the different facets of this creative character. And then, at the end of the day, the world kind of implodes, and everything restarts every single day.”

Schreier and Kane joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes for a conversation about their dances and the “Silver Linings” performance.
