Viewing public art is a welcomed aspect of visiting Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Although air travel has been drastically reduced due to the pandemic, Hartsfield-Jackson still sees a large number of people passing through the airport each day.

Those at the airport will be greeted to a new exhibition of photos called “APG > ATL: Airport 2020” put on by the Atlanta Photography Group, in partnership with Atlanta Celebrates Photography.

“City Lights” host Lois Reitzes spoke via Zoom with APG executive director Judith Pishnery and juror and ACP executive director Amy Miller about this year’s exhibit.

APG has held an annual exhibit at the Atlanta airport for several years, and this is Miller’s eighth or ninth time jurying this exhibit.

“When thinking about putting a show in the airport, you have to think about your venue and your audience. Airports are emotionally charged; they’re visually busy. The people in the airport are busy. They may have anxiety or anticipation. They may be stressed out. So, there’s everything kind of happening in this busy space. I always look for images that are positive, interesting. I do not select images that are about airplanes or flying. It’s too literal, and people don’t want to think about that because some people are anxious about flying,” Miller said.

For those who are anxious about flying or being in crowded spaces, APG is offering the exhibit online.

“All of the images are available for purchase. That can be done by contacting us at APG. I know that would be a great support to artists as well as the Atlanta Photography Group, which is a nonprofit arts organization,” Pishnery said.

The exhibit will be on display virtually and in the main atrium of the airport Sept. 17 through Nov. 11.

On Sept. 24, Miller will discuss her process for selecting the artists and their images for the exhibition. Viewers can also chat with the artists and ask questions about the selections.
