Atlanta’s Landmark Cinema To Show Acclaimed ‘Apu Trilogy’

One of the most lauded film trilogies of all time is coming to Atlanta, but only for a brief time.

For one week only starting on Friday, the Landmark Midtown Art Cinema will show “Pather Panchali,” “Aparajito” and “Apur Sansar,” which together make up the late Bengali director Satyajit Ray’s “Apu Trilogy.”

The trilogy’s story revolves around a young boy and his financially struggling Calcutta family in the early decades of the 20th century. It follows the boy into young adulthood as he seeks the literary career his father wishes for him.

“City Lights” contributor Matthew Bernstein calls the “Apu Trilogy” one of the most beautiful film tales ever made. The films, which were released between 1955 and 1959, have been digitally restored after a fire destroyed the original negatives more than 20 years ago.

The sitar music heard throughout the trilogy was played by a young Ravi Shankar, who at the time was well-known in his native India but not yet world-famous through his association with The Beatles.
