Beautiful City: Blue Heron Nature Preserve

“Beautiful City” is WABE’s series about places to get away from Atlanta without leaving the city.

Today, we’re off to Buckhead.

If you’re ever driving down Roswell Road toward Chastain Park, you’ll pass over a small stream called Nancy Creek. Right before then, across from Pike Nursery, it’s easy to drive past the Blue Heron Nature Preserve, a 25-acre haven for native wildlife.

We recently took a walk through the preserve with Nancy Jones, the preserve’s executive director and founder and a veteran art teacher. In 2001, she saw that this land was going to be developed, and she stepped in to see how she could save it. Since then, she’s made the Blue Heron Nature Preserve her getaway, her classroom and her canvas.
