Beer Jobs Bill Passes In Georgia Senate

The Georgia Senate passed a bill that supporters have dubbed the “beer jobs bill.” Supporters say the bill will lead to more jobs for Georgia residents, will help Georgia’s craft breweries be more competitive with other states, and aid with tourism.

The bill doesn’t allow direct beer sales at craft breweries, but it would let people take a “souvenir” growler home with them from craft breweries. But first, they would have to pay for a tour at a local brewery. The growler could be up to the equivalent of a little more than five, 12-ounce cans or bottles. Those taking a beer tour could consume the equivalent of about three beers while at a brewery.

The legislation is a watered down version of an earlier bill that would have allowed craft breweries to sell directly to those coming to their breweries. But the bill got changed after distributors complained.

The previous version would have allowed a 12-pack of beer to be taken home. The bill also would have let people purchase what amounts to as much as six beers while at a craft brewery.

Right now, those going to a local brewery can purchase a souvenir pint glass and receive limited samples of beer.

The bill also allows residents to take a growler of beer home from brewpubs. But first, they would have to purchase a meal and consume part of the growler at the brewpub.
