Robert Edward “Ted” Turner III, the creator of CNN and a television pioneer, an entrepreneur, philanthropist and environmentalist, has died at 87.

Turner died peacefully on Wednesday surrounded by his family, according to a Turner Enterprises spokesperson.

He began his business career as a billboard salesman, eventually revolutionizing how Americans and the world consume news. He was a consummate salesman who also wanted to eliminate nuclear weapons.
