Another piece of Georgia’s past has been discovered in Cobb County.

A Civil War trench was found by builders planning to develop a senior residential community near Barrett Parkway.

This is one of the trenches where Confederate soldiers fired upon Union troops, according to local historians.

“I think anytime we can preserve a part of our history is good. I realize all of them cannot be saved but I think this is a good move on the community’s part and the developer’s part to work out some sort of agreement to save them,” says Dan Cox, the founder of the Marietta Museum of History.

About 75 percent of the trench will be preserved as is.

“They’ll put a perimeter fencing around that, where none of the construction equipment will be allowed to go into that area,” says Dana Johnson of Cobb County’s Development Agency.

Once construction is complete, signs will be put up around the trench notifying the public about its historic significance.
