Coalition of Health Care Organizations Demonstrate in Support of Affordable Care Act

Georgia‘s Attorney General Sam Olens is in Washington opposing the nation’s new health care law that’s being argued in front of the U.S. Supreme Court. Meanwhile, a coalition of health care organizations rallied in front of the Georgia state Capitol in support of the law.

Doctors, nurses and other health care advocates gathering in front of the state Capitol say the health care law should stay in place because it will help the 2 million Georgians who are currently uninsured.

Dr. Harry Hineman is with the Satcher Health Leadership Institute and Doctors for America.

“The Affordable Care Act is not perfect, legislation rarely is, but it goes a long way to improving our current system by expanding access, improving quality, controlling costs and creating value, goals that most Americans agree will move us in the right direction.

Hineman says it will improve the lives of Georgians like 62-year-old real estate agent Gwen Jones. Jones unsuccessfully attempted to switch health insurance providers after her health premium skyrocketed.

“Only to find out because I had been diagnosed with pre-diabetes I was unable to get any more insurance, so for seven years I have been without insurance having to pay on my own  and having to work with doctors.”

Since the affordable care act passed Jones is eligible for coverage beneath a health care plan run by the federal government.

But she says it’s still too costly. That’s why Jones is anticipating 2014 when insurers will no longer be able to turn away those with pre-existing conditions.

“So I’m looking forward to the Affordable Act, so I can once again enjoy insurance.”

Following the rally, supporters delivered a petition in support of the law to Governor Nathan Deal and Attorney General Olens.

Opponents of the law say Congress overstepped its bounds by requiring all Americans to purchase health insurance. They also say the law has caused insurers to leave the state and is too costly for businesses.
