Broadcast & IT Systems Engineer

The Broadcast IT Engineer I position will be an innovative, creative, collaborative, and technology-driven individual providing IT/Broadcast engineering support for WABE’s Radio, TV, and Digital distribution platforms and production environment.

Responsibilities include: 

  • Support and Manage broadcast by maintaining, fixing, upgrading, and supporting distribution platforms, including TV, radio, video, audio, podcasting, engineering networks, IP-based broadcasting environments, etc
  • Maintain equipment to ensure functionality while quickly and effectively troubleshooting problems on all digital platforms.
  • Support 24/7 broadcast production environment with the appropriate sense of urgency.
  • Ensures all support requests are properly entered into the Support Desk tracking system and addressed per established service level agreements.
  • Installs, upgrades, maintains, and modifies server software, including operating systems, web servers, application servers, directory services, and other server-based software applications.
  • Performs analysis of systems, server, network, and application usage and develops plans for growth and increases in capacity.
  • Provides support and assistance in maintaining and improving the company’s cyber security program.
  • Deploy and maintain Azure Virtual Machines and Azure Application and Networking Services to support growth into the cloud.
  • Responsible for all activities related to system administration and virtualization (e.g., Hyper-V & VMware).
  • Responsible for backup and recovery process.
  • Manage the company’s active directory, Microsoft 365, and VoIP solution.
  • Create IT policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate employee IT onboarding and training.
  • Communicates effectively with members of the team and other colleagues.
  • Provide engineering support for live productions and postproduction workflows.
  • Provides first-call response for broadcast and on-air emergencies, ensuring all incidents and service requests are properly resolved, documented, and classified.
  • Ongoing maintenance, configuring, and updating of all broadcasting systems and equipment, including but not limited to:
    • Video servers 
    • Storage and DAMs
    • On-air playout and switching system
    • RF and broadcast systems (encoders, PSIP, microwave encoder, etc.)
    • IRD systems
    • Radio and News automation systems (Enco, NewsBboss) 
    • Automation systems, downlink systems, and transcoding
    • Radio/TV/Podcasting/ studios
    • Live & recorded programming
    • Digital video editing systems and storage
  • Knowledge of the technology and implementation for ATSC 3.0, AoIP, SMPTE 2110
  • Knowledge and experience in production environments, video editing, and radio/TV master control
  • Ensure all documentation, technical standards, and processes are developed and met.
  • Works closely with the Sr. Network Engineer and other stakeholders to design, implement and test a Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity plan.
  • Collaborate with team members to develop and maintain an equipment management system with equipment life cycle to ensure that system and equipment documentation is current and implement processes to review and improve systems and documentation continuously. 
  • Proficient in utilizing collaborative cloud tools such as Media and Digital Asset Management software.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience, including education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position (such as broadcast, video, and audio experience).
  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related discipline. Certification desired. 
  • Creative, collaborative, and innovative professional with a can-do attitude that translates ideas into action.  
  • Detailed-oriented and highly accurate in record keeping and work habits.

Skills:

  • Experience with maintaining existing systems and equipment, including both TV and FM transmission equipment, STL, and Satellite reception equipment, while planning and designing new systems and equipment to meet changing needs of the organization.
  • Working knowledge of Windows, Linux, and or Mac OSX operating systems. 
  • Familiarity working in IP, including local area networking, file handling, and protocol management as it relates to the broadcast and IT environment. 
  • The ability to utilize a solid knowledge of a mixed analog/digital, SDI/IP broadcast environment.
