Deadline Approaching for Filing Real Estate Tax Return

The values of many metro Atlanta homes continue to slide.

That means a lot of homeowners are still overpaying property taxes.

To challenge the value, Georgia homeowners have until April 1stto file a form with their county.  It’s called the PT-50R.

It’s a one page document that tells your county tax assessor what you feel the true market value of your property is.

“That doesn’t get you the [right to appeal], says Vicki Lambert, Director of Local Government Services for the Georgia Department of Revenue.   “It is just allowing the taxpayer the opportunity to tell the county what they think the property is worth, or that there’s been a change made to the property.”

Still, Lambert says it’s a good starting point for putting the county on notice.

Another piece of advice—she says check your property tax record to make sure it’s got the right square footage and number of bedrooms and bathrooms.  If that’s wrong, it could also affect your assessment.
