Dragon Con Is Going Virtual This Year

The convention normally draws fans from around the country to take part in sci-fi and fantasy costume contests, a massive parade through downtown Atlanta and educational seminars about science and costume making. However, because of the pandemic, the event will be different this year.

Dragon Con is returning this year — in a new form.

This is the first time in Dragon Con’s 34-year history that it won’t be held as a convention you can visit. Instead, it will be a free and livestreamed event complete with panels and programming, according to a Monday press release.

“After an exhaustive attempt to organize a much smaller, more focused, and socially distanced convention, it became apparent that we could not, in good faith, move forward with our 2020 event,” convention co-chair Rachel Reeves said in the release.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, the pop culture, science and fantasy convention expected to host 90,000 in downtown Atlanta from Sept. 3 to 7.

Those who have already bought their passes will be able to get a refund by Aug. 1 or in exchange for a 2021 membership, according to Dragon Con’s website. The registration will roll over to 2021 automatically on Aug. 15, and members will be sent their 2020 badge and merch “as a thank you.”

The Dragon Awards will still happen, and nominations are still being accepted.

More information will be released about the virtual convention in the coming weeks.
