Dueling Groundhogs Make Opposite Predictions

How long will we have to suffer through an incredibly mild winter? Not much longer if Georgia’s most famous groundhog is right.

General Beauregard Lee, who resides at the Yellow River Game Ranch in Lilburn, woke up Tuesday morning and didn’t see his shadow. As the legend goes, that means spring is on its way. But that Pennsylvania woodchuck predicted winter will stick around, according to his handlers.

If you’re wondering which furry prognosticator to believe, Georgia PolitiFact says Beau “long overshadowed by the more famous Punxsutawney Phil, is better at predicting the weather.”

Metro Atlanta’s groundhog has been predicting the weather for more than 30 years, but he doesn’t quite have the experience of his northern counterpart who records show has been at it since the late 19th century.
