Staff at the East Lake Foundation say it was established in 1995 in an effort to holistically transform the East Lake neighborhood into a thriving and sustainable community. The goal also is to upward mobilize families who live at the Villages of East Lake through a variety of programs and services that promote health and wellness, financial literacy and education.

Danny Shoy Jr., who serves as the president and CEO of the foundation, says his team understood early on how economically challenging the pandemic could be for families who live at the Villages of East Lake, so they quickly developed a crisis response plan and established the East Lake COVID-19 Relief Fund.

“We know that this pandemic is so disruptive that it takes additional support and resources beyond 60 days to keep people in place, to keep their utilities on, to make sure people can eat and make sure that they have personal items to be safe,” said Shoy.

On Friday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Shoy told the show’s host Rose Scott that the COVID-19 Relief Fund will help support the long-term and short-term needs of families.

“It’s of paramount importance that our residents in East Lake know that we are here for them,” said Shoy.

During the conversation, he also shared that the foundation is partnering with the Atlanta Chefs Association to provide food to families through food donation drives.

“Many of our families in East Lake know what it means to be vulnerable, so this pandemic can debilitating for them,” said Shoy.

He also discussed the postponing of the TOUR Championship due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resiliency of East Lake residents.
