Concerns are growing among press freedom and civil rights advocates over the case of a Spanish-language journalist fighting deportation from Georgia.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) claims Mario Guevara is currently the only reporter in the United States sleeping in a prison cell for doing his job, and the nonprofit didn’t mince words about what it believes is happening during a news conference at the Georgia Capitol on Tuesday.

“This is a blatant attack on press freedom, on the First Amendment and on the right of communities, especially immigrant communities, to be informed,” said José Zamorra, regional director for the Americas at CPJ. “These communities rely on voices like Mario’s to help make sense of the world around them.”
