Summer seems bright for Georgia’s film industry as several big-name productions take over the metro Atlanta area.
For June, 25 projects are listed as being in production on the Georgia Department of Economic Development website.
Here are a couple of highlights to look out for filming throughout the city:
What’s new?
“Cape Fear” (Apple TV) – The highly anticipated drama series has been spotted filming throughout metro Atlanta since April of this year.
The series, drawing inspiration from the popular 1991 film of the same name and the 1957 book “The Executioners,” stars industry veterans Amy Adams, Patrick Wilson and Javier Bardem in the role of “Max Cady.” An official release date has yet to be announced by Apple.
“The Good Daughter” (Peacock) – Adapted from the novel by Karin Slaughter, the limited series crime thriller follows the lives of sisters Charlotte (Meghann Fahy) and Samantha (Rose Byrne) Quinn as they are forced to come face to face with “a traumatic event from their past.”
“As Charlotte investigates, she’s pulled deeper into a web of secrets, all while questioning whether being the ‘good daughter’ was worth the cost,” an NBC press release for the miniseries reads.
The project, which also stars Brendan Gleeson and Olivia Williams, has been in production since March and is expected to be finished by the end of this month.
“Judgement Day” (Amazon) – The Amazon Studios comedy feature, which began production in March, stars Hollywood favorites Will Ferrell, Zac Efron and Regina Hall.
According to Deadline, the upcoming film follows a young convict fresh out of prison who takes a reality TV courtroom hostage, blaming the megalomaniac TV judge (Ferrell) for a past ruling that the convict feels ruined his life.
Production is currently based at Shadow Box Studios, with additional filming taking place throughout the metro Atlanta area.
What’s returning?
“English Teacher” (FX) – The critically acclaimed comedy series is currently filming its second season in The Peach State, which began production in February.
The series stars actor and comedian Brian Jordan Alvarez as Evan Marquez, a high school teacher in Austin, Texas, who, according to the show’s official website, “often finds himself at the intersection of the personal, professional and political aspects of working at a high school.”
The show is executive-produced by Alvarez, Jonathan Krisel and Paul Simms, who held the same position on “Atlanta,” another Georgia-filmed FX series.
“Tulsa King” (Paramount+) – The Paramount+ crime drama, starring Sylvester Stallone and currently in production for its third season, has commenced filming in both Atlanta and Oklahoma.
Created by Academy Award nominee Taylor Sheridan and executive produced by “The Sopranos” and “Boardwalk Empire” alum Terrence Winter, the streaming series follows Stallone’s Dwight Manfredi, who is sent to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to develop a crime organization shortly after being released from New York State prison.
“Reasonable Doubt” (Hulu) – The popular legal drama, starring Emayatzy Corinealdi (“Ballers”) and McKinley Freeman (“Hit the Floor”), is also in production for its third season.
According to Hulu’s synopsis, the series follows lawyer Jax Stewart (Corinealdi), the most brilliant and fearless defense attorney in Los Angeles, who challenges the justice system at every opportunity.
New faces for the upcoming season include actresses Rumer Willis, April Parker Jones (“If Loving You Is Wrong”) and rapper Kash Doll.
Atlanta reality shows
“Love and Hip Hop Atlanta” (VH1) – The notorious reality series is currently in production for its 13th season.
The show, known for revitalizing the careers of Atlanta-based music artists such as Rasheeda, Yung Joc and Scrappy, follows the trials and tribulations of a circle of the city’s most colorful hip-hop artists. Notable former cast members of the longtime VH1 ratings hit include R&B singer K. Michelle and reality television personality Joseline Hernandez.
Divorce Court (Syndicated) – The long-running court series is currently filming its 27th season at Georgia Public Broadcasting Studios in Midtown.
The series, hosted by former Brooklyn prosecutor and “The View” co-host Star Jones, revolves around settling legal disputes between couples that are facing the end of their relationship.
