From US founding documents to stuffed 'Izzy' doll, Atlanta History Center marks big national and local anniversaries

A century ago, a group of Atlantans formed the Atlanta Historical Society to archive the city’s past.

The first objects the new society collected were bulletins from Spelman College in its early years. Those documents are now part of the organization’s retrospective exhibit and book celebrating its centennial through 100 objects from its collection.

Over the past century, the Atlanta Historical Society, officially named Atlanta History Center in 1990, grew beyond the archives to include houses, gardens and a museum.
