Fulton Chairman Asks For Inquiry Into Recreation Board Appointment

Fulton County Chairman John Eaves wants the state attorney general to investigate the hiring of an Atlanta councilwoman who will be supervising the Atlanta Fulton County Recreation Authority, the board that will oversee Turner Field’s redevelopment once the Braves leave for Cobb County.

In a letter dated Thursday, Eaves asked Attorney General Sam Olens to investigate “whether any ethical or legal provisions have been or may be violated” by Keisha Lance Bottoms’ serving on both the City Council and AFCRA.

Eaves has been a major critic of the Bottoms’ appointment since she was unanimously approved by the board last month. Her appointment comes at a time when the board will play a sizeable role in the future of Turner Field as well as Philips Arena – where the Atlanta Hawks play. The board also oversees Zoo Atlanta and the John A. White Park Golf Course.

Mayor Kasim Reed, however, maintains there’s no conflict of interest, and Friday he accused Eaves of picking a fight.

“This a bunch of false controversy,” Reed said, “and so I think this is a lot of histrionics and his behavior is just funny to me.”

Bottoms, one of Reed’s top allies in City Council, has indicated she intends to stay on the council, though she will recuse herself from votes when a conflict of interest arises. She’s expected to start the job at the beginning of June.

The city of Atlanta controls six seats on the board, while Fulton County controls the other three.
