Just a few days before the 2025 Solar Decathlon semifinals, members of Georgia Tech’s team were informed that the competition would be postponed indefinitely.

The program had been put on hold as part of President Donald Trump’s freeze on federal spending, after the group had put months of work into designing a low-carbon campus for a preschool in Clarkston.

The Solar Decathlon is an international competition that has been hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) since 2002. While the name emphasizes solar energy, the focus has shifted to utilizing renewable materials and energy sources more broadly.
