Georgia Bill Would Create Online Voter Registration

A bill passed by the Georgia House of Representatives would allow people to register to vote online. The option would be offered in addition to paper applications. Proponents say it would create an easier system for Georgians and the state.

A person would need a state driver’s license or an ID card from the Department of Driver Services to register to vote online.

Republican Buzz Brockway sponsors the bill.

“It will be a lot tougher for Mickey Mouse for example to register to vote because the Secretary of State’s Office will be able to devote more resources to looking at paper applications,” he says.

Brian Kemp, who heads that office, has worked with lawmakers and county election officials on the legislation. He says it creates more security.

“We know that these people who are registering in this form have already been through all the checks and balances that we have to get a driver’s license,” he says.

Kemp says the change would also save money. A paper application costs the state around 80 cents. Doing the same thing online would cost 3 cents.

The bill gained bipartisan support in the House and is moving on to the Senate.
