The Atlanta City Council recently unanimously passed a “smart surfaces” policy requiring new and replacement roofs to meet high solar reflectance standards– meaning they have to be built with light-colored, reflective materials, commonly known as “cool roofs.”

The ordinance introduced by District 5 Councilmember Liliana Bakhtiari takes effect next year. It has been touted that the new measure will cool neighborhoods, lower energy costs, save lives, and prevent carbon emissions.
