With Polls Open, Ga. Voters Have Lots Of Decisions To Make In Tuesday’s Primaries

In 2018, several students at Albany State University, a historically black college in southwest Georgia, say they didn’t appear on voter rolls, even though they were registered. They say they were also denied provisional ballots. The report urges several reforms including enhanced training for poll workers.

Voters head to the polls Tuesday to pick the candidates who will run for Georgia governor this November. But they’ll also see other competitive statewide races on their ballots.

Ever heard of insurance commissioner? That office regulates insurance companies and warns consumers when rates jump up. Five candidates are vying for their party’s nomination for that position.

How about labor commissioner? That office tracks how employment ebbs and flows in the state and helps Georgia businesses make workforce decisions. Three candidates are in the mix in that race.

Both of those posts are among the many statewide offices that will appear on primary ballots.

Also up? Two spots on the state public service commission, which regulates Georgia’s utilities. That body is currently navigating its decision to let construction continue at the troubled Vogtle nuclear plant.

Then there’s Georgia’s school superintendent, the state’s top education job. Five candidates are on the ballots in those races.

That’s not counting other big races for the offices of attorney general, secretary of state, lieutenant governor and governor.

Denis O’Hayer of “Morning Edition” recently interviewed all the candidates running for Georgia’s top office. You can hear those here.
