When it comes to making decisions about her children’s education, Shakia McCray feels well-resourced, supported and knowledgeable. But that wasn’t always the case. Previously, the Peach County resident and mother of two faced the possibility of driving her son 30 minutes to school.

Now, after connecting with GeorgiaCAN, a local education advocacy organization, McCray understands that her children’s educational options are not limited to public and private schools. She was able to enroll her son, who has ADHD, at a school that’s 10 minutes away from her home.

As part of a series on “Closer Look” that coincides with National School Choice Week, host Rose Scott talked with McCray, who is now a Peach County parent fellow with GeorgiaCAN, Michael O’Sullivan, the executive director of GeorgiaCAN, and Steven Quinn, the organization’s state outreach director.
