Georgia’s Senior Health Gets Low Ranking

The United Health Foundation’s Rankings Report on Senior Health looked at quality of life issues for senior citizens in each state. Based on 34 different elements Georgia ranked 43.Senior health report

Dr. Catherine Palmier is Chief Medical Officer for the Southeast Region of United Healthcare. She says the study highlights key areas needing improvement, as the senior population rapidly increases.

“Georgia’s challenges include a high prevalence of smoking when compared to other states. Another surprising fact is there are many underweight senior citizens and that leads me to the third challenge that Georgia has is a very high prevalence of food insecurity.” 

On the positive side, Georgia showed a low prevalence of chronic drinking, a high percentage of health screenings and a high percentage of hospice care.
