Born in Baghdad and raised on a Georgia farm, Atlanta comedian Gilbert Lawand likes to complicate preconceived notions about the classic American immigrant story — and he does so with candor and hilarity.
Lawand has long been a beloved fixture in East Atlanta Village, known for hosting the annual Red Clay Comedy Festival and performing on local stand-up stages for nearly two decades.
The veteran comedian’s first full-length special, “Iraqi Born, Georgia Bred,” is out now on Apple TV+ and was filmed at The EARL. Lawand joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes to talk about his latest special and the finer points of life as an “Iraqi redneck,” as he fondly self-identifies.
