Gingrich Drops Kansas Visits, Focuses on Deep South

Coming off a strong win in Georgia’s primary yesterday, Newt Gingrich’s campaign hopes to keep the momentum going.

To do that, the former House speaker is concentrating on the South.

A nod to the importance of Alabama to his campaign, Gingrich spent much of yesterday in Huntsville—even though Alabama wasn’t holding a “Super Tuesday” primary.

“In the morning, we’re going on to Alabama.  We’re going on to Mississippi.  We’re going on to Kansas,” Gingrich told supporters Tuesday night.

But today, his campaign said Gingrich has canceled all of his scheduled appearances in Kansas.  Instead, he’s putting all of his primary eggs into one deep Southern basket.

Emory University political science professor Alan Abramowitz said that’s a viable way to stay in the race, but not a good strategy for winning the GOP nomination.

“My guess is that if he does poorly next week in Alabama and Mississippi, that’s going to be the beginning of the end,” said Abramowitz.

… and it’s looking like an uphill battle.

A new state-wide poll in Alabama shows Gingrich 10 points behind Mitt Romney, tied with Rick Santorum for second.
