Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz will be in Cobb County on Friday for a rally at McCollum Field as he continues his efforts to win the votes of Southerners ahead of the March 1 primary in Georgia and a number of other Southern states.

Cruz has been gaining attention for recent success in Iowa, to the point that GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump has taken jabs at the conservative Texas senator.

This summer, Cruz traveled around the South on a bus, and he’s given more attention to the region than most candidates.

His message connects with many Southern evangelicals, said Audrey Haynes, a political scientist at the University of Georgia.

Visiting Georgia gives Cruz an opportunity to tap into the energy of the local political battle over a religious liberty bill currently pending in the Georgia Legislature.

One of Cruz’s allies here, Republican Sen. Josh McKoon, R-Columbus, is the sponsor of that bill.

“This framework of persecution of Christians, and even within our own country, you know, he tells a story,” said Haynes, “and he can do it very effectively. He knows how to use it to generate support.”

Cruz visits Cobb County International Airport on at 7 p.m. Friday.
