Historic 4th Ward Park Opens Along BeltLine

– Nearly three years after the City of Atlanta and the BeltLine partnership first broke ground, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and dozens of people connected with the Historic 4th Ward Park Saturday officially opened the park.

Speaking at the dedication, Reed said the city will see similar projects in the near future, all part of the Atlanta BeltLine.

“Let me be very clear today,” Reed said. “The Atlanta Beltline is going to be built, is going to be finished, and it isn’t going to be in 20 years.”

Original plans for the area across North Ave. from City Hall East called for a storm water retention pond, but several years ago, neighborhood leaders instead pushed for a park.

District 2 City Councilman Kwanza Hall said the $25-million price tag is $15-million below budget. He said the park goes beyond just providing greenspace for the area.

“The economic multiplier and impact from having this type of amenity gets investment to happen all around this park,” Hall said.

Historic 4th Ward Park, which connects North Ave. and Freedom Parkway, features waterfalls, the city’s first skate park, and includes solar panels responsible for a portion of the park’s power.
