Dessert has become politicized in ways no one expected in the last few years. The current production at Horizon Theatre personalizes it. “The Cake” is the story of a small town baker who is called upon by her best friend’s daughter to make a wedding cake…for her and her bride.

The show was written by Bekah Brunstetter, who is also a writer on the hit show “This Is Us.”

“Something that Bekah does really well in this script is present humans who are complicated, and not really entirely one thing or another” director Lauren Morris tells “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes. “Which is a great thing to think about in our current political atmosphere.”

At the center of the story is Della, played here by Marcie Millard, a small-town baker whose philosophy is one of obedience. “If you want results—if you want to make a cake that you would die for—you must follow the directions,” she says early in the show.

Then the daughter of her deceased best friend walks in with her girlfriend, and the rules and values Della has relied on are called into question.

“The Cake” runs at Horizon Theatre through June 23.
