Inman Park Lock Box

The Lock-up box was used in Inman Park in Atlanta between 1890-1905, reportedly to keep an individual under arrest until a police patrol wagon could pick them up. The following insight comes from an article Celestine Sibley wrote for the Atlanta Constitution, called ‘Atlanta Revives the Lockup Box’ (c. 1965)

Probably no other group of restorers in the country, including those in Natchez and Williamsburg, can exhibit a cute iron, gazebo-shaped lockup for drunks and troublemakers. The Inman Park restorers just acquired theirs and have put it back where it originally served 80-odd years ago in the little park at Delta Place. I went down to see it the other day and learned that it returned courtesy of the Atlanta Gas Light Co. and the city parks department, who displayed it for a time at the Cyclorama. A little marker on the lockup explains its function:

‘Many a miscreant got his first taste of Atlanta hospitality when he was lodged in this lockup box to await transportation.’
