One rarely imagines the art of ballet causing a riot, but that’s what happened in 1913 when “The Rite of Spring” by Igor Stravinsky premiered in Paris.

Stravinsky wrote an epic, haunting score to a tale of ancient Pagans, ritual sacrifice, and the inescapable power of nature. A one-of-a-kind original arrangement of the piece was created by conductor Jonathan McPhee, which now celebrates its world premiere with the Atlanta Ballet, choreographed by Claudia Schreier.

Performances are Feb. 7 through Feb. 14 at the Cobb Energy Centre. McPhee recently joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes to discuss his vision of Stravinsky’s masterpiece.
