Comedian Josh Blue doesn’t shy away from his disability in his stand up. He embraces it wholeheartedly.

Blue has cerebral palsy and much of his material focuses on how others perceive him. In 2006, he won the “Last Comic Standing” competition, which really launched off his career. He was also a member of the United States Paralympics National Soccer Team.

“I feel like being apart of that team was a turning point in my life because up until that point, I didn’t know many people with disabilities or cerebral palsy and all of the sudden I’m embedded in a group of guys are really embracing their disability and not just surviving, but thriving,” said Blue.

Blue started his comedy career in college at Evergreen State College, a liberal arts school in which you create your own major. He discovered that laughter was the best way to educate others about cerebral palsy and humanize it.

Since talking about his disorder on stage, it has made him a spokesperson for those with disabilities. He didn’t go into the comedy field in order to become an advocate, but he’s happy that it is an unintentional result of his humor.

“I feel like everyone can relate to me because everyone has some hang up in their life, and I get great responses from people who have palsy and those who don’t,” he said.
